Have you ever wondered if there are any jobs that seem to have higher divorce rates? You may think that this is impossible. How could a job contribute to divorce? According to Online Divorce, the divorce rate has less to do with the actual job and more to do with job security. Couples who have very affluent jobs, such as surgeons, have a lower divorce rate because their career is more stable.

The studies also show that those who have higher salaries have lower divorce rates; whereas couples with lower incomes have higher divorce rates. As we all know, money is a major cause of divorce. We all know that divorce stats vary because of several different circumstances. Infidelity, income, education, race, and age all factor into divorce statistics. But your job could also really affect your marriage outcome. A job can cause strain to marriage for other reasons besides just financial issues. Certain jobs cause the spouse to be away from home for extended periods or create environments that increase temptations to cheat. Stressful work situations like being involved in a declining industry with poor job security can lead to frustration and unhappiness being projected towards the spouse at home.

Looking at the jobs with the highest divorce rates listed below, it makes sense why certain jobs rank as high as they do. For example, bartenders often work late nights away from family in an environment that could lead to affairs, over-drinking, or flirting. Bartending also falls into a lower pay scale. Having a partner that works late nights could also cause the spouse at home to get lonely and start looking for affection elsewhere.

Flight attendants tend to be away from home for extended periods of time. The switchboard operator is a declining industry.

It is interesting to note that individuals who make a living in industries built around risk, such as gambling Managers, are at the highest risk of divorce. Gamblers are more compulsive by nature, so perhaps they took a chance on their marriage without thinking things through fully. Or maybe they treat their marriage like a bad poker hand and are quick to fold when things start to look badly instead of playing it out to see if things can get better again.

Another notable finding by Yue is that if an individual quits a job that traditionally has a low divorce rate and starts a new job in an industry that typically has a high divorce rate, that individual’s chances of divorce does not change. For example, if an actuary quits his job and decides to become a bartender, his chances of divorce don’t change. Correlation does not cause causation. When a person makes such a drastic change, it usually says more about the person than the actual job.

Extruding and drawing machine setters, operators and tenders. 49.6%

Telemarketers 49.2%

Textile knitting and weaving machine operators, and tenders. 48.9%

Extruding, forming, pressing, and compacting machine setters, operators and tenders. 48.8%

Telephone operators. 47.8%

One thing that all these jobs have in common is that they are in the lower-income bracket.

On the other end of the spectrum, those who have the lowest divorce rate are :

Actuaries. 17%

Physical scientists. 18.9%

Medical and life scientists. 19.6%

Clergy. 19.8%

Software developers, applications and system developers. 20.3%

Physical Therapists 20.7%

Optometrists 20.8%

Directors, religious activities and education. 21.3%

Doctors and surgeons

Most of these professions fall into a higher salary bracket and a higher educational bracket. Since higher education usually correlates to higher-paying jobs, individuals who have higher education are less likely to get divorced.
